A lexicon to figure out what people are saying

AMRAP – As many reps (sometimes rounds) as possible

Box – A box is a CrossFit gym. It could also be something you jump or step-up on

Bumper plates – Rubberized barbell plates that allow CrossFitters to drop weights without harming equipment or the people around them

CFE – CrossFit Enforce (of course!)

Chipper – A workout where you perform each movement once, then move on to the next movement. You don’t go back to a movement you have completed, you “chip away” at the workout.

EMOM – every minute on the minute

GOAT – Greatest of all time

Hero WOD – workout named after a CrossFitter who has fallen in the line of duty (e.g., military, police, firefighter) and is a tribute to the namesake. These are among the most challenging WODs.

Kipping – is the use of the entire body’s momentum to complete a move. Kipping is common in pull-ups, ring-dips, as well as handstand push-ups. Kip or kipping is basically using full-body momentum to do a move.

METCON – Metabolic conditioning that combines strength movements and skill movements for time

PR – Personal Record. Beat your time and record weight? That’s a PR.

RM – Repetition maximum. Your 1RM is your max lift for one rep. Your 10 RM is the most you can lift 10 times.

Rounds plus reps – unit of scoring where you enter the number of rounds completed plus the number of reps completed if you started a new round.

Rx’d – As prescribed; as written. WOD done without any adjustments.

Strict – essentially the opposite of Kip. It means you aren’t allowed to use your body’s momentum to help you with a lift or movement. Think shoulder press.

Tabata – A workout of 8 intervals alternating 20 seconds of max rep work with 10 sec rest. Total is 4 minutes per exercise. Score the lowest interval rep count, or sometimes total rep count.

Task Priority – Workout format where task is set, score is time i.e. 21, 15, 9 rounds for time

The Girls – benchmark WODs with female names created by CrossFit Headquarters and universally known

Time Priority – Workout format where time is set, score is work i.e. AMRAP

WOD – Workout of the day
